To see the only video of my mother before she died, and to see our two young sonsplaying at Thanksgiving Day family get-together was priceless. Our grown sons and daughter-in-laws have now seen it too. For all of us, it was am experience more poignant than any photo album could provide [EIAJ]. Thanks so much for you help in piecing the miniDV tapes of our wedding together on one DVD. Tarah Your service was fast, very fairly priced, and your communications was clear and timely. I have already recommended you to friends for their own tapes, and will continue to do so. Dave I received the EIAJ dvds today; Viewed the video and am pleased with the result. Best wishes. Mel Thanks for a great job. Enclosed is a check for 2 additional DVDs. Thanks, Pat We got the [VHS] 'flood' tapes and DVds yesterday. We sat and watched one of them last night and it made us cry good tears. Thank you for your help. We did not expect to ever see our (little) kids again. Cindy DVD looks good. Only saw the [Skip Field] tape once after I made it in 1973 for a college class. Chuck I just wanted to say 'thank you'. The DVDs turned out fantastic. and you made it so easy. I cried when I watched them. I am going to cry happy tears with my Mom when we watch them together for Mother's Day. I am looking for the last 2 [8mm camcorder] tapes and will get them to you soon. I am going to pass your card around to a couple of my friends. Have a great day. Dawn We had a really old videotape at the university and did not know what was on it. We had tried for several months to find someone to play it for us and were unsucessful. Green Tree made the tape playable again with baking and gave us a preview of the contents so we could decide what to do next. Thank you. JJ
FAQ What should I do with water, flood, or sewage damaged VHS, audio, or other magnetic tapes?
Rinse contaminants from wet VHS or other tapes - gently. DO NOT try to play them! |
Do not dry: seal wet tape in bag and keep cool. Prevent mold. | Flood mud and fire smoke gets into everything. |
Many flood damaged tapes can be saved with some up- front attention. Do not dry wet tapes out. Gently rinse it in a bucket of clean water (not tap water which contains chlorine) to remove oils, surface mud, etc. Then gently rinse in distilled water to further clean and dilute contaminants that may have been in flood waters or sewage. Seal in two clean ziplock bags while still wet and store in the refrigerator until arrangements are made for professional help. Ship by a quick method. PREVENT mold growth. In general, VHS, Beta and other larger format tapes have a very high recovery rates. Hi8, Digital8, and miniDV (DV) tapes are much smaller and delicate even in the new condition, the success rate for these is a bit lower. We won't know until we try...
What kinds of damaged media can be repaired? We have been successful at transferring damaged media to new media stock, including: Wrinkled, creased, broken magnetic tapes of various kinds. Wet, moldy open reel, and cassette type magnetic tape. ‘Sticky’ magnetic tape due to material breakdown, which requires a special baking procedure to become temporarily playable. Photo editing to reduce crinkles, yellowing, and other defects. 8mm movie film with ‘vinegar syndrome’ cleaned and lubricated for transfer. Various mechanical problems with audiocassettes and videotapes including jammed spindles, broken case, broken tape, missing wheel locks, etc. Significant ‘pops’ in grooved audio records. Scratched CDs and DVDsWhile media can be repaired to make the transfer to new stock; many repairs should be viewed as a temporary measure and cannot restore it to its original strength and condition. The original should be kept and safeguarded, and not played unless necessary. Replaced cases and mechanical parts are probably the only type of lasting repair.
What are ‘sticky’ tapes? The so-called ‘stick’ tape syndrome is fairly common in 1970’s vintage magnetic tapes due to an unknown issue with the long term affects of the materials used. “Sticky’ tapes will leave a sticky, gooey deposit in video heads and on all mechanical parts it comes in contact with during playback. This condition cannot normally be identified by simple visual inspection of the tape, it will appear to be normal.‘Sticky’ tape is generally accepted to be a long term aging defect that becomes apparent on certain magnetic tapes. It has been shown that tape with this problem will often respond favorably to a heating method which temporarily reduces the symptoms long enough to transfer the tape to a different medium. The effect will usually last from several weeks to months, but it is temporary.
Can you record onto media other than CD and DVD? Yes; we can record onto most media upon request including cassette tape, reel to reel tape, VHS, VHS-C, 8mm camcorder tape, Hi-8 camcorder tape, etc.
My new CD/ DVD won't play? Computer writ-able media such as CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R will play in most CD/DVD players made after about 2002. Some CD/DVD manufacturers were slow to support these media standards. If you have a preference for DVD-R or DVD+R media, please let us know, we can supply either type. To prove that the media is not defective try it in several players, especially newer ones. Please contact us if after trying several newer players if it still will not play; we will work with you to find a solution. Having a new CD/DVD that you can not play does neither one of us any good.

Key to table: first number id the serial number, then=, then datecode (xxyy where xx is last digits of the year, yy is the week). This number can usually be found somewhere inside the chassis of the unit. It can be stamped or from a marking on a part such as the large electrolytic capacitors C001, or transformer. Anyone that owns such equipment and has reason to open it up, look for this number. I would be glad to add the Sn/ Datecode to the chart; each of us individually will own only a few of these pieces of equipment. Collectively, we can have a valuable serial number resource.
